Editing

Everyone needs an editor. (No one knows that better than a writer.) An editor can give your writing the right tone and help you express yourself with style and clarity.

Editing is my geeky passion. I’ve got a knack for choosing the right word, rearranging confusing sentences, and sorting out grammatical tangles. Transforming good writing into better writing comes naturally to me – and I love to do it.

I work with a variety of genres – memoir, fiction, nonfiction, essays – and I have the expertise to make your writing as clear and professional as it needs to be. It’s not my job to change your unique voice or ideas; I’ll simply ensure that your work is engaging, clear, and precise.

Services

I offer three levels of copyediting to suit your needs.

* Light: correction of spelling, punctuation, grammar and basic structural errors.

* Medium: light copyediting, as well as the flagging of problem areas.

* Heavy: above services, plus improving style, structure, content and flow; revision of sentence structure, adjustment for tone, attention to paragraph transitions and vocabulary; revising problem areas.

Rates:

My basic rate is $40 per hour. This may vary, depending on the scope and complexity of your project.

Clients say:

“Kate Haas is the kind of editor writers dream of working with and publishers thank their lucky stars to have on their side. She is simultaneously insightful and gracious, deft with a pen (or keystroke) and protective of the writer’s voice. Sharp-eyed, yet non-intrusive, she never forces a piece to be something the writer doesn’t envision; rather, she is brilliant at helping the author, himself or herself, to reflect carefully, dig deep, revise areas that need improvement, and produce his or her very best work for publication. I cannot recommend her highly enough.”

- Shari MacDonald Strong, Senior Editor, Literary Mama; editor of The Maternal is Political: Women Writers at the Intersection of Motherhood and Social Change

“Kate Haas edits with extraordinary precision and skill. Every change or suggestion she made improved the text of Wild Feminine without losing any of the original voice, in fact her input strengthened the voice so that it was more distinct.”

- Tami Lynn Kent, MSPT, author of Wild Feminine

“As a self-publisher, I wanted a high-quality book that could hold its own in a competitive market. Kate helped organize my thoughts, gave objective advice, and suggested ideas that really strengthened my chapters. Readers tell me that Beyond Sagebrush is an easy read and its concepts are presented well – a challenge for a science based book. With Kate’s pricing structure I paid for the editing my writing needed, not the “one price fits all” pricing of other editors. And as for quality, my sales figures speak for themselves!”

-Darin Furry, author of Beyond Sagebrush

“As a university professor who has been published in a number of different academic journals, I have worked with many different editors over the years. In my experience, Kate Haas possesses an extraordinary gift for the job. She has a keen intellect, and also a strong sense of intuition that helps her decipher what I’m trying to say, even when I’m not completely sure myself. She retains a deep respect for my own voice, and enriches my writing as she edits it. It’s still very much my voice, but steadied and sharpened, made more persuasive and articulate, smooth and polished.”
